Interpreters and Translations for Marriage
If documents are not in English, or if someone does not understand English well enough for the marriage, extra steps may be needed.
Marriage paperwork needs to be understood properly. If documents are not in English, or if either party does not understand English well enough for the marriage, extra help may be needed.
When translations may be needed
- birth certificates are not in English
- divorce papers are not in English
- name documents are not in English
- other supporting records are not in English
When an interpreter may be needed
An interpreter may be needed if either party cannot properly understand:
- what marriage means
- what is happening in the ceremony
- the legal words being said
Important point
The celebrant must be satisfied that both people understand what they are doing and are freely consenting.
Good practice
Use properly qualified translators or interpreters. The Attorney-General’s Department also publishes the required interpreter paperwork, including the certificate of faithful performance.
