The main rules still apply
Even if you live overseas, you still need to:
- lodge a NOIM at least one month and no more than 18 months before the marriage
- provide the required evidence of identity and birth
- show divorce or death documents if relevant
- be physically present in Australia for the marriage
- have two adult witnesses
Can we prepare things from overseas?
Yes. You can often prepare the NOIM and other paperwork while overseas.
Current federal rules also allow remote NOIM witnessing in some situations, but the witness rules depend on where you are.
Can the marriage happen online?
No. The marriage itself must happen in person, with both parties, the celebrant, and the two witnesses physically present.
