One Month's Notice Guide
Australian marriage law normally requires at least one calendar month's notice before the marriage.
Australian marriage law normally requires your celebrant to receive the NOIM at least one calendar month before the marriage.
The important point
The notice period starts when the celebrant receives the NOIM.
It does not start when:
- you decide on a date
- you ask a question
- you pay for the booking
Simple examples
- if the NOIM is received on 10 April, the earliest usual marriage date is 10 May
- if the NOIM is received on 31 January, the earliest usual marriage date is 28 February, or 29 February in a leap year
Can it be less than one month?
Only if a prescribed authority approves a shortening of time.
That is limited to specific categories and is not automatic.
Helpful tip
If you want the process to move as smoothly as possible:
- book first
- prepare the form with NOIM Easy
- get it witnessed early
- send the paperwork through as soon as you can
