ID Requirements for Marriage
Here is the simple version of the identity and supporting documents usually needed to get married in Darwin.
To get married, your celebrant needs enough evidence to be satisfied about your identity, your date and place of birth, and whether any previous marriage has ended.
What you usually need
- a passport or birth certificate as evidence of date and place of birth
- photo ID
- evidence of any previous divorce or widowhood, if relevant
- official translations if documents are not in English
Common examples
People often use:
- a current passport, or
- a birth certificate plus photo ID
If your documents are unusual, overseas, or do not match each other neatly, extra evidence may be needed.
Name differences
If your name appears differently across documents, you may also need:
- a change of name certificate
- marriage evidence from an earlier marriage
- other supporting documents that explain the difference
